Butchertown

Louisville Butchertown homesThe Butchertown real estate area in Louisville, Ky is a community just to the east of Downtown.  Originally designed in the first quarter of the eighteen hundreds, the streets were named after major Whig party members, such as John Quincy Adams, Daniel Webster and Henry Clay.

In the 1850′s, the Beargrass Creek was re-engineered to be kept away from Downtown Louisville, but in the process, was diverted through Butchertown, before it was known as such.  As a result, many butchers found the area attractive because of the proximity to such an easy way to get rid of animal remains, by throwing them into the newly rerouted creek!

As the city of Louisville continued to grow and suburbs became more and more popular, Butchertown began to fall into disrepair.  When the Great Flood occurred in the 1930′s, that really sealed the deal for many area residents and many simply moved onto higher ground leaving behind destroyed homes.  Later, highways and the construction of flood walls contributed to the further decline of Butchertown, until about the 1990′s.

At that point, many young professionals persuaded the city to change the zoning of the area from commercial or industrial to a more appropriate zoning of residential, at which point many vacant homes were purchased and repaired.  Today, there are many small shops in the community in addition to new construction and beautiful remodel jobs, all nestled up close to some of Louisville’s finest landmarks, such as Slugger Field and Waterfront Park.
